Kermanshah Rugs, Antique Persian Kermanshah Rugs and Carpets
Persian Kermanshah rugs are a unique type of Persian carpet that originates from Kermanshah, a city in western Iran located near the border with Iraq. Kermanshah rugs are highly esteemed for their craftsmanship, bold designs, and rich color palettes.
Kermanshah was historically a significant cultural and trade hub in western Iran, particularly during the Qajar dynasty (18th–20th century). While rug production saw a decline in the 20th century, antique and semi-antique Kermanshah rugs continue to be sought after by collectors and antique enthusiasts.
Key features of Kermanshah rugs include their distinctive medallions and borders, often adorned with floral motifs such as palmettes, vines, leaves, and arabesques. Nature scenes are also popular in the designs of antique Kermanshah rugs. Traditional color palettes are characterized by rich, vibrant hues like deep reds, blues, ivory, greens, and golds, all created with natural dyes that lend warmth and subtlety to the colors. The background colors are typically dark navy or burgundy, which makes the designs stand out vividly.
Most importantly, Kermanshah rugs utilize the asymmetrical Persian knot, also known as the Senneh knot, in their knotting system. The high knot density, which ranges from medium to very fine, reflects the quality and durability of these rugs. The pile is generally composed of high-quality, lustrous wool, sometimes featuring silk highlights. The warp and weft foundations are usually made of cotton, although wool foundations can be found in older examples. While antique Kermanshah carpets were originally designed for large homes and palaces, modern rugs from this region are increasingly made for smaller living spaces.
