Pazyryk Rug Style and Pazyryk Carpet
The Pazyryk rug is the oldest hand-knotted oriental rug known to man. It was excavated from the steppes of Mongolia in a Scythian prince’s tomb in 1948, along with an assortment of other textiles. Radiocarbon testing revealed that the Pazyryk carpet was woven in the 5th century B.C., which meant that it had been frozen for well over 2,500 years. The rug, characterized by advanced weaving techniques and sophisticated designs, was a testament to the fact that the art of rug weaving went much beyond the 5th century B.C.
The Pazyryk rug, measuring 6’x6’7”, was hand-knotted with 278 Turkish knots per square inch. It was made using hand-carded and hand-spun wool that had been dyed with plant and insect dyes.
Today, this masterpiece is housed at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. According to the museum website’s description of this ancient rug: “Its decoration is rich and varied: the central field is occupied by 24 cross-shaped figures, each of which consists of four stylized lotus buds. This composition is framed by a border of griffins, followed by a border of twenty-four fallow deer. The widest border contains representations of workhorses and men.”
While much has been said about the rug’s design, its origin is still a source of debate. The Pazyryk Valley was located in the midst of active trade routes between China and Central Asia. The possibility, however, that the Pazyryk rug was produced by the nomadic Pazyryks is quite slim because its intricate and sophisticated design is a reflection of a more cosmopolitan culture. That is why it is likely that the rug came from either Persia or Armenia.
